Learn more about Laser Hair Removal

Throughout time, a variety of methods have been tried and tested in the pursuit of soft, smooth, hair-free skin. These methods, which include shaving, waxing and electrolysis are often messy, time consuming, painful and only provide temporary results. Side effects of traditional hair removal methods include ingrown hairs, shaving rash, red bumps and minor bleeding. Advancements in technology means that excess or unwanted hair can now be eliminated safely, quickly and effectively using Ellipse IPL (intense pulsed light). This medical grade IPL can be set up to ensure optimal parameters provide safe, fast and effective treatments for every individual.

How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Intense Pulse Light Hair Removal works by penetrating the epidermis with a wavelength of light that attacks the follicle at the growth stage. This heat energy destroys the cells which cause the hair to grow. As hair grows in cycles, not all follicles are damaged each time. Therefore, it is recommended that clients undergo a course of treatments over time to treat the entire area.

Ellipse hair removal has been clinically proven to be safe and effective through years of clinical trials and studies. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials. Ellipse carefully controls the amount of energy and pulses and delivers the desired energy in the optimal waveband for the treatment. These factors explain why millions of treatments have been so successful and to such a high standard.

IPL is extremely safe in the hands of an experienced therapist. Our highly qualified aesthetic skin therapists have undergone IPL training courses and extensive clinic training in hair removal and skin rejuvenation. Clinical trials documenting Ellipse’s safety and effectiveness are carried out by leading doctors prior to release of the product.

How many treatments will you
need?

Typically clients will need 4-6 treatments (in some cases up to 10) every 4 to 6 weeks depending on the area being treated. Some ares are often denser and can sometimes require more treatments. Very light and fine hairs are more stubborn and might need a few extra treatments. It is important, during your consultation with a doctor, to mention any medical conditions. Some of them, such as hirsutism (excessive facial hair in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) or hormonal changes might need further treatments.

Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

It is important not to pluck, tweeze, wax or use hair removal creams during the four weeks before treatment. This ensures that as many hair follicles as possible contain a hair which can be destroyed.
It is also important to try and avoid tanning (sun, solarium or self-tanning products) before and during the treatment period. Otherwise your tanned skin could absorb the light instead of your hair. It is also recommended to use sunscreen (min. SPF 30) for a 2-4 weeks following treatment.

What can I expect?

The sensation of the treatment is often described as similar to the feeling of a rubber band flicking against the skin. The sensation only lasts for a fraction of a second and most clients report a feeling of moderate discomfort. If you have concerns though or are receiving treatment on a sensitive area our experienced therapists will be happy to discuss some pain relieving options. Immediately following the treatment there will be temporary redness to the skin and a slight sunburnt sensation, this will disappear after a short time with most people returning to normal activities immediately.

Can all hairs be treated?

IPL Hair Removal is just as unique as the person it is being performed on. Different variables – such as skin colour, hair colour and hair thickness – will affect how many sessions will be required. Ellipse is able to treat all colours of skin, and has pre-programmed settings for different hair thicknesses.

IPL Hair Removal is usually most effective when there is a large contrast between your skin tone and hair colour – for example, it will usually work best on people with light skin and thick, dark hair. This does not mean that dark-skinned, light-haired people will not benefit from IPL Hair Removal; it just means that sometimes, additional treatments may be required. Because the treatment relies on absorption of light by melanin, there needs to be melanin in the hair. This means that very light, red, grey or white hairs do not respond well.

Benefits:

  • Quick, easy and more comfortable method of hair removal - IPL devices have a relatively large treatment window and are able to cover large areas quickly (in comparison to laser or electrolysis). Typically, it is likely to take around 5 - 10 minutes for both underarms.

  • No unsightly regrowth - you can shave between treatments and, unlike waxing, epilating or using depilatories, you do not need to allow the hair to grow at all for IPL to be effective.

  • No more Ingrown hair - IPL avoids the risk of ingrown hairs experienced with other methods such as waxing and shaving.

  • Permanent results - over time, you should see permanently reduced hair re-growth, if you continue with treatments.  The number of treatments required will reduce and the time between treatments increase.

  • Can be done on tanned skin

  • No downtime - Lunch time procedure

  • Safe for all skin types incl Asian and African skin

  • Lighter re-growth - hair that does re-grow will become lighter and finer and less easy to see.

Why does it take more than one
session to achieve the best results?

In a nutshell, this is because hair growth follows 3 stages, with hair all over the body being in various different stages at any one time.  Additionally, the growth cycle of the hair varies in time length depending on the part of the body in question.

IPL is only effective on the hairs that happen to be in the actively growing stage at the time of treatment, therefore a number of treatments are needed to be able to treat every hair in the growing stage.

Which areas on the body can be
treated?

Seriously, anywhere. IPL Laser hair removal can be done on just about any area of the body where there is a need for unwanted hair to be removed. (Face, neck, hands, underarms, stomach, bikini line, legs, toes etc...)
